I’m Chasen (not Jason) Marshall and I’m a writer and photographer originally from Southern California. This website is dedicated to my work as a writer and photographer. In many ways though, this website is also a representation of who I am as a person, since a lot of what I write about and shoot is what I’m interested in or what I’m interested in learning more about.

Growing up, I hated my English classes, but I loved stories. Ironically, I ended up an English major in college, and continue to love reading and now writing stories. The majority of my work has been about the people and culture of sports, though I’ve also written about city and state politics, music, food and media. My work has been published by ESPN.com, SurflineThe Huffington Post, OC Weekly, Houston Press, Surfer Magazine, Columbia Journalism Review and various media around the world.

I graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York City in 2010, where I earned my M.S. in magazine writing. My master’s project, about the life of a veteran horse-racing jockey, won the Melvin Mencher Award for Superior Reporting, and was published on ESPN.com. I’ve also won several regional and national awards for writing and photography.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy surfing, running, traveling, shooting photos, reading and trying to get myself to commit to my first triathlon.
